Abstract

This study aimed to examine the working elements of cognitive behavioral intervention Stay Cool Kids?! This intervention attempts to decrease externalizing behavior and prevent future behavioral problems in children. It was examined which themes are addressed during the intervention and whether addressing more themes from specific categories (Social cognition, Emotion regulation, Self-perception, and Other) could predict treatment success. Data was collected in clinical practice on 232 children (57.3% boys, 18.1% girls) between 7 and 13 years old. Regression analyses revealed that category could not predict treatment outcome, indicating that the success of the intervention is not associated with specific elements of the intervention. This suggests that a combination of certain elements or factors outside of the themes make the intervention more or less effective. Moreover, findings suggest treatment protocol adherence by trainers was not optimal, which leads to several suggestions for future research and recommendations for clinical practice. Keywords: working elements, intervention, social cognition, emotion regulation, self perception
