Abstract

The number of young people volunteering is decreasing. For a recruitment to be effective, the content should match people´s motivation. In Study 1, the motivation of youngsters to volunteer was investigated. Youngster between 16 and 27 were asked to fill in an online questionnaire about their experiences with volunteer work and their motivation of engaging in it. It was found that young people are intrinsically motivated to help others. The self efficacy and ability to make a change by helping others are the driving forces to engage in volunteer work. The lack of time was named as main constrain. In Study 2, a recruitment campaign matching the youngsters´ main motive for volunteering was set up. In an online survey, youngsters aged 16 to 27 years received a flyer appealing to their motivation of self-efficacy in helping. In the experimental condition, the flyer had an additional paragraph acknowledging the youngster´s lack of time. Furthermore, they were asked to name arguments why helping is important as a Self-Persuasion technique. The flyer in the control condition was lacking the additional paragraph and participants were asked to name their hobbies instead of arguments. The hypothesis was that applying these techniques in a recruitment campaign would increase youngsters´ intention to engage in volunteer work. No effect was found. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of Self-Persuasion on actual behavior of volunteering remains a worthwhile topic to investigate. 3 Keywords: motivation to volunteer, youngsters, self-efficacy, self-persuasion, acknowledging the resistance
