dc.description.abstract | Where do transmigrants feel at home if they have lived in two unique places throughout time? This thesis sought out to explore this question by analyzing how the Filipino community in Milan has dealt with the relationship between transnationalism and the historical development of a sense of place. Although there has been fruitful research in the combined field of transnationalism and sense of place in recent years, the historic dimension is seldom present. Therefore I interviewed sixteen Filipinos in the Italian metropole to discover how their current place attachments came to be with the help of Pascual-de-Sans’ (2004) concepts idiotope (a deep connection) and idiotopy (a geographical attachment). The findings showed that place attachments are fluid and change throughout time. Some individuals were able to create a new home in Milan after migrating from the Philippines, others were still attached to their Filipino space and some respondents were unable to pinpoint one primary attachment. Throughout history transnationalism bounded some individuals to their Filipino home, but in some rare cases it also caused detachment. I concluded that transnationalism is another factor in creating a sense of place and that studying temporalities highlight where continuities and discontinues originate from. | |
