In the aim to reduce carbon emissions, converting to renewable energy sources is something countries worldwide are getting involved in. One of these renewable sources is wind energy. In the border region of Germany and the Netherlands it becomes clear that placement of wind turbines seems to go easier in Germany than is the case for the Netherlands. Protest seems to be more in the Netherlands compared to in Germany too. This is researched through a study of the case of the municipalities Roerdalen and Echt-Susteren in the Netherlands, and districts Heinsberg and Viersen in Germany. They are situated right next to each other, but seem to be different. This research aims to find out how the institutional and local context affects locals’ opinions on wind energy. The easier implementation in Germany would suggest more acceptance, but is this really the case? What kind of factors influence local residents’ opinions? Does this differ between Germany and the Netherlands? Through interviews with local residents, opinions and reasons for the opinions were determined, while municipalities were interviewed to get a better view on the local and institutional context.
