Abstract
Different visual signals, such as manual gestures in natural settings aid rapid comprehension
and timely response in communication. Previous research highlights the impact of body
movements on the communication process. Social actions also play a vital role in meaning
comprehension. This study investigates the influence of head gestures (nods and shakes) on
underlying intentions and their alignment with social actions. We analyse head motions
during uncontrolled face-to-face conversations, focusing on vertical and horizontal
movements. Our findings illuminate how social actions shape head movements, facilitating
the conveyance of meaning in interactions. Using a corpus of dyadic conversations with
manual annotations, we explore the presence of head movements in a natural conversation.
These findings will help us to understand the extent to which our goals influence how we
move, as well as unrevealing the intricate connection between head gestures and social
actions. This research contributes to our broader understanding of visual signs in
communicative dynamics and provides insights into the mechanism by which meaning is
conveyed in interactions.
