dc.description.abstract | Historically seen, the manufacturing industry is one of the greatest energy consumers in the world resulting in the urgency to enhance energy efficiency in manufacturing processes. The adoption of energy efficiency technologies are considered effective means to address this urgency complying with governmental pressures and changing customer demands. Currently, the Dutch manufacturing industry is part of the advent advanced production technologies which is characterized by innovative and transformative technologies that drive the digitalization of production processes within the industrial sector. This study examines whether these advanced production technologies can facilitate the adoption of energy efficiency technologies. Regarding this adoption process, organizations are often faced with elaborate interventions. Therefore, this study examines the role of the 3-D intervention model (i.e. functional, social, and infrastructural dimensions) in the adoption of energy efficiency technologies within Dutch manufacturing firms to ultimately achieve sustainable development. This study is based on a mixed-method design, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative research approaches. The quantitative study is conducted based on the European Manufacturing Survey. The analysis is performed using multiple regression analysis. The qualitative study is conducted based on five semi-structured interviews with managers or owners of Dutch firms within the manufacturing industry. The analysis is performed using theoretical coding of the transcripts resulted from the interviews. The results of the quantitative and qualitative studies differ in some aspects. However, they agree that advanced production technologies can enhance the adoption of energy efficiency technologies in the production processes by giving insights and the use of sensors. In adopting these technologies, both analyses confirmed the importance of the infrastructural dimension in supporting the intervention. Adding to this, particularly in the qualitative analysis the importance of the functional and social dimension is emphasized during the adoption of technologies. In doing so, the functional dimension diagnoses and evaluates the potential adoption of new energy efficiency technologies. The social dimension can enhance the acceptance of implemented energy efficiency technologies by personalizing the change among employees and providing training to increase employee knowledge. | |
