Abstract
The horror genre has long been defined by a specific formula of murder sequences, drawing upon the feeling of catharsis. Connected to the genre, however, are certain gendered notions that have long been seen as defining aspects of the horror genre. Examples are the violence toward women and the sexualization of the female body. While many of these aspects are still used in the genre, recent films have tried to take a different stance in regard to gender. The film Midsommar, directed by Ari Aster and released in 2019, is one of the films that changes the gendered notions of the genre which results in a film that gives a refreshing look at the genre. The aim of this research is to analyze how exactly Midsommar shifts the expected gender norms of the horror genre.
