Abstract

Foraging is the act of searching for things in multiple places. Because we do this on a daily basis, it is an important part of daily living. The goal of this study was to examine the possibility of detecting foraging-related problems in certain psychological disorders through their shared connection to personality-facets. This study aimed to examine the relationship between trait openness to experience, age and explorative foraging style. To measure openness, the HEXACO-60 personality questionnaire was used, and a hybrid foraging search task was used to measure foraging style. All three hypotheses were discarded. The first expectation was a positive correlation between openness and foraging. Results however showed no significant correlation. Age on the other hand did share a weak/moderate positive correlation with explorative foraging style, although a negative correlation was expected. Finally, though expected, there was no moderation effect of age on the relationship between openness and explorative foraging style. As the results show, foraging style should not be predicted by psychological professionals on the basis of personality or mental disorder.
