Abstract

The Circular Economy received great interest in the last decade by business and policymakers as a way to move towards a sustainable future where people and businesses thrive within the ecological boundaries of the planet. Circular business models are the operationalisation for businesses to pursue this sustainable growth in which SMEs are regarded as the driving force in this transition. However, this transition is currently not happening due to a lack of adoption of CBMs by businesses. This study conducted a qualitative multiple case study in an attempt to understand the barriers and drivers faced by Dutch SMEs in their implementation of CBMs. Semi-structured interviews with five companies operating a variety of CBMs were performed to gain an in-depth understanding of diverse barriers and drivers experienced in 7 key categories: (1) Financial; (2) Organisational; (3) Product, information and technology; (4) Supply chain; (5) Market; (6) Institutional and Regulatory; and (7) Sociocultural and Environmental.
