Abstract

This master thesis delves into the merger and acquisition (M&A) activities within the energy industry, focusing on the differences between green and non-green assets. The primary research question addressed is: ‘To what extent are energy companies divesting their non-green assets amidst investments in green assets, and how does this affect genuine transitioning versus potential greenwashing?’ For the empirical analysis a sample of 343 firms over a twenty-year period from 2002 to 2022 is used. The study examines data sourced from Orbis and Datastream, specifically looking at acquisitions and divestitures divided into green (i.e. wind, solar, hydroelectric power) and traditional ‘grey’ shares (i.e. coal, oil, and natural gas).
