Abstract

This thesis aims to navigate the way that violence was birthed in the city of Florence during the Thirteenth and Fourteenth century. It contains an analysis of the changes and developments that occurred within the Florentine public justice system in this era to curtail the disruptive effect that mainly feud and vendetta related violence had on public life and the civil peace within the city. There are two main developments of which the effect on the Florentine peacekeeping efforts was significant; the first being the introduction of so called peace contracts (Instrumenta Pacis) and the second is the birth and development of a prison system at a greater scale than previously seen in European penal contexts. This thesis considers how these developments have had an effect on the peacekeeping and peacemaking efforts in medieval Florence
