Predicting civil participation in energy cooperatives in the Netherlands

| dc.description.abstract | More and more individuals start participating in energy cooperatives which exists out of of two activities: volunteering and investing. This study identified two variables that can be used to predict participation in energy cooperatives. The first variable is innovation adoption. The higher an individual scores on innovation adoption, the more he/she will volunteer. The second variable is the type of motivation to participate in an energy cooperative. All motivations to participate in energy cooperatives can be divided into two categories: self-regarding motivations and norm-driven motivations. The higher an individual scores on self-regarding motivations, the more he/she will invest. Norm-driven motivations exist out of two types: social norm-driven motivations and moral norm-driven motivations. Social norm-driven motivations are represented by the concept of community identity in the context of energy cooperatives. Although no relation between social norm-driven motivations and any type of participation is found, did the analyses indicate that a relation could exist, in line with other studies. Further research should be conducted to get a better understanding of this possible relation. Moral norm-driven motivations are represented by the concept of environmental concern in the context of energy cooperatives. Moral norm-driven do not have a relation with participation in energy cooperatives. | en_US |
