Abstract

This thesis examines how disinformation practices by Shell affected the company after going through various environmental scandals. It explores impacts on the company’s image, profitability and overall performance. It does so by using an embedded case study approach, which examines in detail how Shell has managed the fallout from environmental scandals by spreading disinformation. The limitations of these strategies for combating the increasing scrutiny from both environmental organizations and regulatory bodies are explored. Shell has been relatively successful in maintaining financial stability and its market position. However, the research reveals some levels declining trust and credibility associated with Shell’s operations. In addition to this, environmental organizations have played a role in revealing discrepancies between Shell’s actual commitments and statements, as a result there is increased awareness and stakeholder pressure. However, these effects on Shell operations and position have been relatively weak. From the findings, an argument can be made that transparency and accountability within corporate communication are important since disinformation used by companies still lead to some inherent risks that businesses should factor into their calculations. The study concludes by recommending further research into similar cases across different industries, the use of primary data to gain deeper insights, and longitudinal studies to track the evolving impact of disinformation on corporate reputation and performance
