Abstract
Income inequality poses significant challenges. This study explored the impact of perceived income inequality on organisational dynamics, such as organisational trust (OT), organisational citizenship behaviour (OCB), and OCB for sustainability, ultimately linking it to the achievability of environmental sustainability goals within organisations. This study aims to understand income inequality’s consequences and stimulate equitable and sustainable organisational practices is the aim of this study. Employing a quantitative approach with a correlational design, data was collected from salaried employees in the Netherlands through an online survey using Qualtrics. Analysis in SPSS involved correlation and double mediation analyses, supporting all four hypotheses. It indicated a moderate level of perceived income inequality within organisations, with noticeable variations in perceptions among employees, and higher perceived income inequality correlated with diminished OT and lower levels of OCB. Additionally, income inequality negatively impacted OCB for environmental sustainability, mediated by OT and OCB. Interestingly, perceived income inequality also yielded a significant direct effect on OCB, highlighting the relationship’s multifaceted nature. In conclusion, the study found a negative relationship between perceived income inequality and OT, OCB, and OCB for sustainability within organisations, raising questions about organisations’ capabilities to achieve environmental sustainability goals effectively in light of the current complexity of organisational systems.
