Abstract
The Dutch government sets course for the energy transition in the release of the Klimaatakkoord in 2019. Private homeowners have a high responsibility in doing sustainable home adjustments and according to current policy, homeowners should take initiative. In Arnhem, this has led to the rise of Wijk van de Toekomst-initiatives, where homeowners from neighborhoods can apply to become a Wijk van de Toekomst where they can receive expert guidance in becoming more sustainable. This research aims to get insight into what extent homeowners of Wijk van de Toekomst neighborhoods are willing to do sustainable investments to realize a more sustainable neighborhood that conforms to the Dutch energy transition policy.
Homeowners claim to take the environment into account in their daily activities, but these are small-scaled. When larger-scale interventions such as home insulation arise, homeowners are less willing to do sustainable interventions, because of a trade-off between sustainability and comfort and a lack of feeling of urgency. This leads to a laid-back attitude towards sustainable initiatives such as Wijk van de Toekomst. As policy-makers desire homeowners to take the initiative, policy-vision and the willingness of homeowners clash, leading to the question if homeowners are the power behind the energy transition.
