Within the study, document analysis, qualitative observations and semi-structured interviews are used to obtain data. Through these data, it should become clear how the circular transition in the Buiksloterham area has worked out by looking at the main achievements and biggest challenges in terms of the social, natural and spatial factors. By looking at the Buiksloterham area through the single case study, the ultimate goal is to see how other regional circular economy initiatives can derive insights from the practices and initiatives implemented in the Buiksloterham area, and what specific strategies can be employed to facilitate the spread and adoption of these practices. The research has shown that, unlike in many other trajectories, the social dimension in particular has not been underemphasized in the Buiksloterham area and that there is a strong focus on involving the local community to achieve innovative developments in circular practices. In addition, interventions in the area of policy and regulation within spatial planning have proven to be of great importance to actually get circular practices through and has acted as a stick to actually drop the focus on circularity, which has been stimulating in terms of knowledge generation in the field of circularity.
