Abstract
Holacracy has received an increasing amount of attention as a ‘revolutionary’ management system that can greatly benefit organizations. The unique combination of self-management with the adoption of bureaucratic aspects is argued to greatly benefit organizations through transparency, flexibility of the organization and decentralized authority. In practice however, not all organizations seem to benefit from holacracy as theory would suggest. Competencies of employees have been proven to be an important factor for the success of self-management systems.
This study aims to examine the influence of competencies on the success of holacracy.
Based on a multiple case study research design including 2 organizations and a total of 11 interviewees, this research does identify a relation between certain competencies and the success of holacracy. The results indicate that communication competencies are important for the success of holacracy through an increase in transparency. Creativity, working organized and individual flexibility competencies show an influence on the success of holacracy through an increased flexibility of the organization. Confidence and personal leadership competencies show an influence on success through the well working of decentralized authority. Leadership competencies in the form of an informal hierarchy shows a negative influence on decentralized authority.
