Abstract

This research explored the future perspectives of motorcyclists in the Netherlands with regards to a transition from fuel-powered motorcycles to electric-powered motorcycles. The aim was to understand how these perspectives are formed and how they relate to the intentions of motorcyclists towards adopting an electric-powered motorcycle. To comprehensively understand these intentions and perspectives, a qualitative research approach was undertaken. The method of gathering the required insights from the 20 participants of this research, was through the use of semi-structured interviews. Guiding this research was a framework that integrated concepts from two theories, these were futures studies and the theory of planned behaviour. By analysing the collected data through the lens of these theories and their concepts, provided a broad understanding of how future perspectives of motorcyclists are shaped. The findings of this research showed that the intentions that motorcyclists have towards adopting an electric-powered motorcycle were closely tied to the primary activity they personally associated motorcycling with. Which in turn influenced both what they expected from the future and what they ideally hoped for. From patterns that were identified in the data, three distinct motorcyclist profiles emerged. These three profiles were: commuters, group riders, and recreational riders.
