Abstract
Waste separation can be an effective way to protect nature and sustain the environment: By re
using rather than reproducing, valuable resources can be preserved and less nonbiodegradable
products are produced in the first place. Whereas environmentalism is a vast norm in the Dutch
society, this is not true for all cultures. People from other cultures arriving in the Netherlands
might be found wondering about the rather serious norms of waste separation. In the course of
the refugee crisis, many people with a different cultural background arrive in the Netherlands. In
order to further encourage environmental protection, but also to help the newly arrived to
acculturate to the Dutch society, the research question of the intervention at hand is the
following:
“How can people with a cultural background other than the Dutch, be best informed about
waste separation and how can their behaviour be directed towards starting and continuing to
separate household waste?”
