Abstract
Between October 7, 2023 and April 1, 2024, a series of events happened in western countries that showed a lower amount of legitimacy for Israel than was expected after the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. In my research, I look at these changes through the perspective of framing and legitimacy. It is my belief that changes in framing lead to changes in legitimacy. This indirect effect is caused by changes in framing leading to changes in available criticism which leads to changes in legitimacy. I have researched this hypothesis using discourse analysis to look at documentation from 3 western actors between October 2023 and March 2024, those actors being the Office of the President of the United States of America; The European Council and the European Parliament. The researched frames were defensive democracy, legalism and humanitarian. In my research, an indirect link between frames and legitimacy was discovered where actors change frames based on cultural leanings and events happening on the ground during a conflict. The frames that the actors entered during this timeframe allowed for more criticism, but it is possible for actors to enter frames which allow for less criticism. This allows for future research into the topic and research into how other actors switched frames during the same conflict.
