Abstract
The proliferation of Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles (UCAVs) raises critical concerns and questions about how states perceive and subsequently integrate this technology into their defense strategies. Therefore, this thesis combines Offense - Defense Theory with the concept of sociotechnical imaginaries in order to provide a comprehensive explanation for states’ responses to UCAV technology. Through employing a comparative case study design focusing on the United States and China and leveraging an innovative theoretical framework, this thesis uncovers that underlying societal beliefs and strategic imperatives together provide a powerful explanation of how and why states react to UCAVs in the manner that they do.
