dc.description.abstract | This thesis analyses the fears expressed in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein; or, the Modern Prometheus (1818) and Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897), and compares them to reviews from contemporaries of the authors. Prior research conducted on these two novels mainly discussed one or two fears epitomised by the characters and events in the novels. By providing an extensive chapter on fears in the nineteenth century, this thesis provides relevant background information in order to be able to understand the fears of abnormality, (female) sexuality, science, degeneration, fate, and the Other that are conveyed in Frankenstein and Dracula. The secondary sources used in the writing of this thesis provide a balanced argument for the questions asked in this thesis. | en_US |
