Abstract
Achieving goals is crucial for our well-being. Failure to achieve goals reduces our self-esteem or leads us to be less happy than we would like to be. Many factors are hindering us from achieving our goals, therefore, the first study of this paper concerns itself with the factors that make goal achievement difficult. For that, 96 people participated in an online survey, with results suggesting that problematic smartphone use is an important factor for goal achievement. Based on these findings, an intervention study was designed aimed at helping people achieve their personal goals via positive smartphone use. Due to time constraints, two cognitive tasks closely related to goal achievement were used. In this study, 102 participants either watched fun videos before participating in the cognitive tasks or afterward. It was expected that the people who watched the videos before the task would perform better on the cognitive tests. However, the results could not confirm the expectations, most likely due to the choice of the outcome measures being the cognitive tests instead of goal achievement. Exploratory results indicated that the enjoyable use of the phone elicited a better mood in the participants. This gives reason to follow up on the approach of using positive smartphone use to facilitate goal achievement, as people in a positive state are also more likely to pursue their goals. Therefore, future research should further examine the approach of positive smartphone usage for people’s goal achievement.
