dc.description.abstractThe current study examined the effect of Dutch-English code-switching produced by a native Dutch speaker on the speaker’s intelligibility, credibility, and competence as perceived by Dutch interlocutors. In this experimental study, Dutch-speaking participants listened to trivia statements with or without (i.e., in Dutch) a code-switch and had to rate the statements regarding their credibility and also gave their perception concerning the speaker’s intelligibility, credibility, and competence. The results demonstrated that the presence of a code-switch did not have an effect on the credibility of the trivia statements. In addition, the presence of a code-switch and the interlocutor’s own experience with code-switching did not affect the speaker’s intelligibility, credibility, or competence. Furthermore, no difference was found between the credibility of the statements with a code-switch and those without (i.e., in Dutch and English) in the code-switching condition. Finally, a correlation was found between intelligibility, credibility of the speaker, and competence.
