This thesis investigates whether the variables accent and conscientiousness influence the way doctors are perceived with regards to competence, trustworthiness and comprehensibility. To investigate this, Dutch participants are asked to listen to an audio fragment in which either a British, French, or Ukrainian accented doctor gives them medical advice, and this is followed by answering questions related to the dependent variables about accentedness and a personality test. The results show that native British English speakers are rated more positively on all three dependent variables compared to both non-native speakers. However, there is no significant difference found between the French and Ukrainian accented English speakers. Moreover, conscientiousness did not show an influence on any of the dependent variables. The practical implications include creating awareness among the population about this bias towards native speakers, and a short-term solution might be speech training for non-native doctors.
