dc.description.abstract | This thesis investigates the case study of NYMA, a former industrial site in Nijmegen, transformed into a permanent creative cluster. The research addresses the central question: how does the redevelopment of NYMA influence creativity and experimentation in entrepreneurship, as it evolves into a regulated and organised creative space? This case study delves into three main research themes: the impact of place identity and built heritage reuse, social (informal) policies and societal necessities shaping creative milieus, and stakeholder perspectives on creativity and experimentation. Through the use of interviews, these results are compared to the experiences of the stakeholders of NYMA. Key findings include the inspiration drawn from the site's historical significance, alignment of past innovation with future aspirations, and community engagement. Challenges include balancing planned development with maintaining a dynamic, open environment for creativity. Social policies are crucial but may stifle creative spontaneity and experimentation. Stakeholders emphasise the importance of face-to-face interactions and diverse programming. Challenges like rising rent prices, exclusion of particular creatives, and overdevelopment threaten to undermine NYMA’s potential as a dynamic and innovative space. This thesis offers recommendations to enhance NYMA’s development, emphasising on a balanced approach that preserves authenticity while creating a durable creative cluster. | |
