dc.description.abstract | This thesis examines the cityscape of Umayyad Córdoba that acquired a legendary status in the written source material already during the Umayyad era (AD 756-1031) as well as in the centuries that followed. In this research, the archaeological, literary, and legal sources that are concerned with the topography of Córdoba are studied in order to reconstruct the urban development of the city. Córdoba was not built anew by the Umayyad rulers, the first of which arrived in the city in 756. By then, Córdoba had already existed for over 900 years, and its cityscape was marked by its Roman and Christian structures. This thesis inquires how Córdoba, through the efforts of the Umayyad dynasty and the Andalusian elite, transformed from being characterisable as a “Romano-Christian city,” into the “Andalusian city” that was so vigorously remembered by chroniclers such as Ibn al-Maqqari. | en_US |
