Abstract

As Gothic romance novels that share many similarities, Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre and Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca both feature a distinct combination of use of environment and space. In both novels, the protagonist describes her surroundings in such a way that it affects her the space she has assigned to herself, and the space in which society places her has influence on her environment. Even though the manner in which this is applied is not entirely the same in both novels, the end results are very similar.
