Abstract
In this thesis, the representation of black female sexuality in Alice Walker’s The Color Purple is examined, in relation to the political debate of feminism in the late 20th century. The Color Purple was subject to controversy when it came out in 1982. It shows the oppression that African- American women have faced, and how their oppression is different from African-American men. Additionally, it shows how this oppression has led to the black feminist movement. Gender and race are inextricably linked, and this thesis aims to shed light on this type of intersectionality.
