Abstract

This thesis attempts to understand the educational presence of foreign royal children at the Julio-Claudian court in relation to the much larger process of empire formation. By approaching the court as a contact zone, it scrutinizes the traditional view of this imperial education as an instrument of control and demonstrates that there was much to gain for both parties. In doing so, the thesis not only contributes to a fuller understanding of the imperial court as a vehicle of interaction, but also underlines the importance of supranational networks in a multicultural empire.
