Abstract
The sustainable organization is an organization that wants to be sustainable. The organization has a
driving force to become sustainable and the organization goes beyond legal requirements to achieve
this aspect. The sustainable organization consists of seven aspects: the sustainability manager,
setting goals, top manager, the individual employee, changing the driving force of the organization,
cooperation with external stakeholders, and knowledge and expertise. To become a sustainable
organization, a change process could be used. There are six aspects that make the change process
towards a sustainable organization different from other change processes. These aspects are:
appropriate assimilation with the organization, maintaining the driving force, maintaining
motivation, learning, problem solving, and creating a realization of lack of knowledge.
In this research we look at simulation games as an intervention tool, and how they could contribute
to the change process towards a sustainable organization. A simulation game is an intervention tool
that is a game with an explicit and well-thought meaning. Simulation games are a learning method in
which people participate in a structured activity or simulation. A simulation game can be created to
achieve 6 goals: learning, creating knowledge, enhancing communication, developing skills,
motivation, and solving problems.
