Abstract
The practice of documenting travel has always been an important part of the Tourism Studies field. However the focus of these studies have tended to be on the practice tourist photography, other ways of documenting the tourist experience in the twenty-first century have not been widely studied. This thesis addresses this gap by focusing on the act of documenting travel in the twenty first century through travel sketchbooks. In my thesis I focus on the practice of travel travel sketching as talked about by its twenty-first century practitioners. I argue that instead of being a relic of pre-photography times contemporary travel sketchbook practice addresses uniquely twenty-first century concerns from a modern view point. In conclusion this thesis, by examining travel sketching as a way to look at the modern world brings to attention anther way of documenting the contemporary human experience.
