Abstract
Game Balancing enhances the user experience of application and games. A number of
physiological measures can be used to determine the perceived difficulty for a game balancing
mechanism. Heart Rate Variability (HRV) has the property, for instance, that it increases when the
perceived difficulty becomes too high. This study investigated whether a mechanism that utilizes
this property can be implemented to regulate the level of difficulty during a computer game. In
addition, a questionnaire is used to estimate whether the user experience is related to the use of the
proposed mechanism. The findings indicate that the proposed mechanism does not have a
significant influence on the players game experience.
