Abstract
The cover design of the Penguin English Library, published by Penguin Books in 2012, has a very interesting effect on the reader. On the one hand, it provides the reader with an insight into the narrative by using a colour which gives a first idea of the novel’s genre, and several images which play an important part in the narrative. On the other hand, they are the binding factor in making the Library recognisable as a coherent canon. By investigating the publisher Penguin Books and the covers of the 2012 Penguin English Library, this thesis means to answer the question of how the cover design of a novel within the Penguin English Library contributes to the interpretation and function of that novel, both as an individual work and as part of a canon of works.
