Abstract

Star Trek was conceived as a sci-fi series that took place in a future in which humanity has evolved into an intergalactic Federation composed of over a hundred planets. This Federation explores the galaxy on starships with a strict set of rules on how to deal with new civilizations. The Federation is a highly culturally pluralistic organization that shares many ideals with how mainly progressive thinkers believe the American multicultural society should be, along with sharing several important parallels with the early American colonies. A major enemy to the Federation, a cyborg species called the Borg, have a keen interest in assimilating humanity and adding them to their Collective hive mind. This thesis analyzes both parties and seeks to determine what their place is in the debate surrounding American multiculturalism by defining the term, applying it to a canon of Star Trek works, and comparing the two factions in order to determine if the Borg are an antithesis to the culturally diverse Federation or whether they are just another enemy trying to stop humanity from exploring the stars.
