Abstract
This thesis describes tone and tone sandhi theoretically, and it reports empirical research on the tonal phonologies of two newly available speakers of Yuhuan Wu Chinese, compared to the speaker reported by Gussenhoven and Wang (2014). Tones, perceived as pitch (and phonation), form phonologically autosegmental tonemes. The two new speakers had tonal phonologies similar to the first speaker, while demonstrating interspeaker variation in the way they phonetically enhance the HL-MHL-contrast. Tone sandhi is the process of environmentally induced tonal alternations, which for all three speakers of Yuhuan Wu patterned right-dominant, with the exception of HL in syllables with sonorant onsets.
