Abstract
The increasing focus on knowledge-based economies resulted in the formulation of different innovation strategies aiming at the stimulation of national economic growth worldwide. The Netherlands did not lag behind as different implemented regional economic policies focussed on the polishing of Dutch economic deficit. The economic focus shifted towards the development of clusters and valleys to increase regional economic growth. As one of the Dutch Valleys, Health Valley is established in the region Arnhem-Nijmegen in 2004 and is coordinated by the Health Valley organisation since 2006. Nowadays, the Valley counts over 300 different partners throughout the Netherlands. However, growth also has its downsides. Therefore, this thesis is concerned how the interplay between the Health Valley organisation and its partners is contributing to the strengthening of the health sector in the region Arnhem-Nijmegen, and what the problems and challenges are for the Health Valley organisation in achieving this. Using an institutional approach, this thesis applied concepts like institutional thickness and strategic selectivity to Health Valley in the region Arnhem-Nijmegen. This resulted in an analysis of how Health Valley is contributing to regional economic growth, and how it is restricted in doing so.
