Abstract
This research shows that gentrification is not as widespread as is usually assumed by Anglo-Saxon scholars. Gentrification is presumed to have settled in cities all over the world. Despite their size, history, or location, every city in the world experiences gentrification. At least this is the idea. My interest in Central and Eastern Europa and my stay in Poland have brought me to the conclusion that this part of Europe is different. The street of Chwaliszewo seems a perfect place for gentrification: close to the Old Market and the river, and with plenty of houses ready for redevelopment. This thesis explains why this area, and neighbourhoods like it, do not gentrify. The reasons are diverse and range from ownership issues to living preferences, to finance and legislation. The absence of gentrification can be seen as a problem, but also as an opportunity. This thesis gives recommendations on what a city can do.
