Abstract
The Klassiek, Letterkundig Panthéon was one of the many nineteenth-century series of the Dutch classics. The aim of this research is to reveal the Panthéon’s formula for success in a time with a large amount of competition. In line with the ‘histoire du livre’ the success from the Panthéon is defined based on three different approaches: the publisher side, the Panthéon-books itself and the reception of it. This extended look, also used by Kuitert (1993), produces a better understanding of the functioning of a nineteenth-century series of the classics. The Panthéon turns out to be not only the first series of its kind, but also the precursor of a revolutionary era in the book production. Besides that, the Panthéon was continuously responding to the need of times, was constant brought under the attention and was accessible for everyone. The interaction between and the interplay of the shape and the content of the Panthéon turned out to be the great formula of the series’ success.
