Abstract

This paper is about the relationship between the Baltic rye trade and mortality rate in Amsterdam in the 18th century. It examines whether or not a correlation exists between the fluctuations in rye trade and the mortality rate of the population of Amsterdam. This is examined by finding a relationship between volumes of rye trade and rye prices and finding a relationship between rye prices and the mortality rate of Amsterdam. It finds that there is no relationship between the volumes of rye trade and the mortality rate. However there does exist a significant relationship between the fluctuations of rye trade and the mortality rate. The mortality rate changes in relation to the shifts in rye trade that existed six years prior to the mortality rate.
