Abstract
This paper considers the continuity between the theory of poststructuralist- and affective turn-theoreticians based on their shared interest in Jacques Lacan’s concept of ‘the Real’. Whereas poststructuralists such as Baudrillard argue that the Real is long gone and impossible to reach, theoreticians such as Laura Marks implicitly argue that the Real can still be touched upon through an experience of Firstness, a concept she borrows from semiotician Charles Sanders Peirce. In the following I put Marks’s assumptions to the test, using the Firstness-experience of music as a bait in my search for the Real. Firstness is, after all, analogous to the Real, with its pre-personal and pre-conceptual nature. Music, on the other hand, with its lack of images and words (the media of respectively Lacans imaginary and symbolic registers), seems perfect to connect listeners to the Real.
