Abstract

The aim of this study is to gain insight into the relationship between workplace harassment and personal and professional self-esteem in order to provide a more comprehensive and accurate understanding of the different types of mental consequences workplace harassment can have. The definition of workplace harassment was developed to include unintentionality. A cross-sectional quantitative study was conducted to test the hypotheses that workplace harassment has a negative effect on personal and professional self-esteem. A third hypothesis was constructed to test for any mediating effect personal or professional self-esteem might have on the relationship between workplace harassment and the respective self-esteem. Multiple regression analyses, as well as a mediation analysis through the PROCESS model on SPSS (Hayes, 2017) were conducted. A significant negative effect was found of workplace harassment on the negative dimension of personal self-esteem. No evidence was found for the other hypotheses. In conclusion, this research sheds light on the impact intentional or unintentional workplace harassment may have on the self-esteem of individuals who experience such treatment in the workplace. It also provides valuable insight for the future development of theory.
