Abstract

Due to the situation forced by the pandemic of Covid-19, the educational setting had to adapt to new necessities changing the traditional teaching, well established in Spain, to a virtual one. This led to the rise of gamification as a useful tool for teachers in order to increase the engagement and motivation of students. The purpose of this study was to analyse the differences in the use of gamification by teachers of English as a second language in different Spanish high schools and the role of Covid-19 in the change of use. Furthermore, this study sought to find out if the age of teachers and the type of institutions they are working in, either public or private, makes a difference in its use, as well as which are the best-known benefits and the most common problems teachers have to face.
