Abstract

The goal of this thesis was to establish if there is systematic variation in mean F0, F0 range and F0 variability in the speech of female advanced Dutch learners of English in their first and third years at university. This explorative investigation looked at the influence which the study of English Language and Culture has on F0 in the L2 English of students and also investigates whether L1 Dutch is influenced by L2 English. This has been done using two reading tasks and a map task eliciting spontaneous speech. Results showed that English has a wider pitch range and greater variability than Dutch. Another observation was that third year students’ mean F0 in English and in Dutch was higher than that of the first year students.
