Abstract
This study explores the social networks, general satisfaction and experienced safety of LGBTQIA+ newcomers in the Netherlands. This research builds upon previous studies that have discussed the safety of LGBTQIA+ newcomers and examines two relatively new subjects: social networks and general satisfaction. A mixed-method approach was used in order to answer the research question. In total, 26 LGBTQIA+ newcomers completed a survey and four participated in in-depth interviews to share their experiences. Results imply that LGBTQIA+ newcomers are most in contact with their friends, followed by residents, neighbours and family. LGBTQIA+ newcomers are least satisfied with their living situation and most satisfied with their health. On average, they rate their experienced safety inside the asylum centres as insufficient. Next to the main subjects, the topics social wellbeing and the influence of the pandemic were also included. Based on this study, recommendations for COA and (LGBTQIA+) organizations can be made.
