Abstract

This thesis evaluates and compares various approaches to bridging skills gaps in the context of European SMEs. These approaches are: skills development through the EU Talent Partnership, an improvement of the working conditions and a more intensive utilization of the current workforce. For each of these approaches, their effect on SME performance is measured. Additionally, for the EU Talent Partnership, it is investigated how the level of integration of the migrant worker might influence this relationship. Furthermore, for the more intensive utilization of the current workforce, the effect of the severity of overtime on the relationship was taken into account. A survey aimed at (HR) managers of European SMEs was conducted. The results of this survey are analyzed with the help of a logistic regression. The analysis shows no significant results, meaning that none of the skills-gap filling approaches significantly improved the SME performance of the organizations in the sample. These findings offer intriguing starting points for future research on Talent Management and the Resource Based View.
