Abstract

Food supply chains are one of the major drivers of exceeding the earth’s capacity. Throughout all stages of the food chain life cycle, which stretches from farming to manufacturing through to consumption and waste disposal, unsustainable practices of food chains inflict exceptional detrimental impacts on the environment. Though, changing the status quo has deemed to be rather challenging. Due to the complexity of global supply chains networks, it can be unclear which actor is changing the status quo and which actor actually has the capacity to change the system. Food retailers are perceived to have a substantial influence on sustainability through sustainable supply chain management practices. Therefore, this study aims to define “How do retailers integrate sustainability criteria into globally distributed supply chains and supermarkets?”. The topic is studied by investigating the practices of supermarket chains that belong to the a multinational food retailer. Contrary to the expectations, individual influences were found to not play a substantial role in decision making rationale. Outcomes show that integration of sustainability is based on contextual. Another vital part of the essence to the sustainability approach are internal documents and risk mitigation. Nevertheless, power relationships, organizational design and tension did contribute.
