Abstract
The conquest of Southern Italy and Sicily by the Normans is a well-documented historical period, as are the cosmopolitan and multicultural aspect of their reign. However, there seems to be a gap in scholarly
research in regards of the overlap of these two aspects. This thesis will analyse the multicultural aspect of Norman Southern Italy in the context of military history. It will seek to illustrate the direct role of conflict in the establishment of a complex cultural meshwork between different societies, and the exchange of information, technology and people which follows. It will take into consideration the most important works of the chroniclers of the time, analysing them through modern eyes.
