Abstract

This thesis explores the representation of the authorship of an acclaimed author from the start of his career, the debut novel, to the apex, winning an award or the culmination of his or her esteem. Because Kazuo Ishiguro won the Nobel Prize in Literature last year, the representation of his authorship seemed relevant to analyse. The representation of authorship is formed by the author himself, the publishers, the reception of the author and novels, the readers and many more agents in the literary field. Due to the scope of this thesis, this research focuses on three agents: the publisher that has the most influence on the representation of the novel; the author who represents himself through interviews; and the literary critic who, next to reviewing the novel, also influences the representation of the author to the readers. The manner and changes in representation is approached from the theoretical perspectives and theories by Bourdieu, James F. English and Squires. In addition, Chapter 1 includes theories about paratexts by, amongst others, Gérard Genette.
