Abstract
This research investigates to which extent Russian society is willing to continue supporting the war in Ukraine. This research is focused on the impact of the Russo-Ukrainian War on Russian society and how Russian society is responding to these impacts. This qualitative single case study analyses the various aspects that can affect the willingness of the Russian society to support the war. These aspects are democratic idealism, the economic impact of the war, the progression on the battlefield and the rally around the flag effect.
This research has concluded that democratic idealism has not been of any influence on the willingness of the Russian society to maintain supporting the war. Also, the economic burden of the war on Russian society and battlefield progression have had limited influence on the willingness of the Russian population to support the war in Ukraine. The rally around the flag effect has proven to be the most significant influence in affecting Russian society's willingness to support the war. The high degree of patriotism and nationalism in the Russian population due to the war has resulted in high war support in the Russian population even though the Russian army suffered a high amount of casualties. It is however the question of how long the rally around the will last and if the Russian society will remain supporting the war if the rally around the flag effect has diminished.
